Hell, we know you’re tired of the word remote. And Covid. Everything we do and everywhere we look is probably, and even unconsciously, influenced by them. While we don’t want to rub salt on the wound, we do want to tell you how their widespread consequences and effects can be an advantage.
It comes as no surprise that more and more people are working from home these days. It was hardly happening before 2020, but as the pandemic hit, things took a quick turn. Cue home office, cue Zoom calls and Slack messages, cue you’re on mute and so many other infamous habits we’ve picked up along the way. While we’re creatures of habit and the first times were tough to adjust to, we adapted very quickly.
Many sources have said that remote workers are even happier and more productive working from home than when they had to commute to the office. The benefits are many: you spend less time on the road or on public transport, you have full control over the communication with coworkers and you have an overall better work-life balance. In a New York Times article, they state that “almost 60 percent of Americans working from home would prefer to work remotely “as much as possible” after restrictions are lifted, with 40 percent saying they preferred to return to the workplace”.
Companies have started riding the wave and are choosing to establish distributed or fully remote teams. This means that they’re starting to look beyond their local borders for talent. This means fighting for a job opening is going to become more and more competitive. For companies, it means looking at a much bigger and diverse candidate pool, trying to source the best of the best. For tech candidates? It means fighting harder, yes, but also allowing yourself to look for jobs all over the world.

As stated on Sifted, “in London (…) the average cost of having an employee in the office five days a week is £500 per month. Companies clearly benefit from this shift to remote culture, so how can you?
1. Salaries without borders — literally 💸
While it may get really competitive landing that one job because you’re no longer competing with only people from your city — or country — but potentially with thousands from all over the world, you can strive for salaries beyond what your local companies can offer you.

You’re probably already very familiar with online communication tools such as Zoom, Google Meet, Slack, Trello, and so on, but it’s definitely going to be part of your every. Single. Day. More importantly, your communication efforts are going to be put to the test with async conversations and filtering information. Changing jobs will no longer be a nightmare to face. You get to keep the same life and the same routines as before, because you no longer need to recalculate new routes to get to the office in the morning and figure out how much earlier you need to wake up. And on that note…
7. Say bye bye to public transportation and cars 🚇
With commutes no longer in the picture, you get to save on subway/bus passes and fuel. Think of all the money you can save in a year and the impact this will have on the environment! If more and more people do this, the effects will surely be mind-blowing — on the wallet and on the planet.
8. Be the owner of your own schedule ⌚
Remote companies no longer want to keep a tight “leash” over their employees. In the same way many of them let you choose where you’re going to work, they let you choose when you’re going to work. This comes with great autonomy and equal measures of responsibility, but you really benefit from all of it. While you’re fully accountable for your work, you’re also more likely to choose at what time to start working, when to fit in your lunchtime and give you the freedom of working less on a certain day and compensating on another. Scheduling doctor appointments and going to State services is no longer an impossible feat.
9. Customize your office 🖥️
Whether that means choosing a beach or a coffeehouse as your workplace or sticking with your home, you get to fully make it yours. If working from home, like most of us, is your thing, you get to fully customize it to your taste. Keep pictures of your kids, your pets, and your granny. Keep it a mess only you see or keep it sparkling clean. No one will interfere. A lot of companies are actually giving you a budget to improve your home office, with perks like a comfortable chair, a computer screen, an ergonomic mouse, and so on.
10. Your dog will thank you 🐕
Or whatever pet you have. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than commutes when it comes to animals. Say goodbye to those early morning goodbyes (aye, pun intended) and leaving your dog by the door looking at you with those puppy eyes (we’re on a roll here). Unsurprisingly, animals are the number 1 fans of remote.
