The job market is getting savage by the day. Everything counts when it comes to making a difference and getting the chance you’ve been looking for. And when speaking about tech jobs, truth be told, every small detail counts to get you ahead, especially when the industry is going global. So, if you’re looking to enter the tech industry, be aware that preparation is required. To help you, we made a list of tips that will help you position yourself for global tech jobs.

How to position yourself for global tech jobs: 5 steps to get you ahead

Over the past years, the technology evolution made the tech industry a viable option for many professionals. More than that, it has become a career growth opportunity since it covers all sorts of sectors, thus giving professionals around the globe the chance to develop their knowledge and skills.

The tech job market has become broader and global and, therefore, more eye-catching, not only because professionals can get a wide range of opportunities and perks, but it also promises a good work-life balance (the so much sought-after objective for many these days).

However, remember that with this ambitious global market, professionals must adjust to this new job-hunting reality to thrive. The global tech jobs are no longer restricted to a specific location, you can either work locally or remotely. And this borderless market now requires not only companies to look for talent outside their country but also candidates to do better to improve their chances of landing a global tech job.

And while there is really no big secret to breaking into the global tech market, there are a few aspects you must consider when looking and positioning yourself for global tech jobs.

We’ll cover them. Here’s what you must do:

1. Networking is crucial

If you’re looking to get ahead in your career and decide to look for global tech jobs, you need to create a fuss about yourself. How to do so? Networking. Yes, you can have a good list of referrals, and companies will certainly consider this (given that these can help them to get an insight into your professional background and skills). However, these days there’s more to it. Keep in mind that big tech companies (and even the smaller ones) get a sheer volume of applications from potential candidates. Raw applications are seen as a black hole for tech companies, as they don’t display any particular suitability; however, having a solid network with people working in the field might do the trick.

How to do so? Try joining some professional organizations, mentorship programs and networking groups where you can get in touch with other professionals with similar interests as you (and learn from them)— and even possible employers. Also, you can attend conferences and networking events. Get out there, meet people, talk to them, work with them, and show them your talent. This will certainly lead you somewhere.

2. Boost your resume

This is still your first and the main touch-point with the companies you’re applying for. We all know that often resumes are lost among tons of others, so in the best-case scenario, you’ll get lucky, and someone will reach out to you. But you can improve your chances.

Boost your resume and adjust it to each company and job position you are applying for. Optimising your CV allows you to get past applicant tracking system screenings and people who get it. Remember that these applicant tracking systems scan through dozens (or hundreds) of applications and choose those who seem the best fit for the job. So, optimising your CV with the right keywords will increase your chances of being picked up.

Plus, list and quantify (whenever possible) your tech experience, namely the languages and frameworks, for instance. It’s all about optimising the data and inserting the right keywords to make it easier to read and stand out in the crowd. Lengthy descriptions, text blocks, multiple pages and bullet lists must also be avoided.

However, the most important thing, especially when applying to a different country, is to ensure you’re in line with the current CV model. That’s why you must, first of all, do your research and get all the information on the country, the job market and the industry you’re heading your application to ensure you comply with the parameters.

3. Get ready for your interview

Nowadays, it’s becoming common for companies to do several rounds of interviews: an initial phone screening, followed by a second interview with the hiring manager, then a technical interview and finally one or more meetings with some key team members. Seems a lot, right? But don’t be surprised if they do so. Just get ready for each stage and fine-tune your interview skills to ensure you have what you need to stand out.

Having a short pitch prepared might help you out. One where you mention your professional background and why are you targeting that specific job and company. Bring out the big guns and show them that you’ve done your homework and researched them; speak about their goals, what you bring in, and how you can help them move even further.

Meanwhile, keep in mind that when going for global tech jobs, this probably all takes place virtually, so you really need to bring your A-game to make the best impression.

4. Be thoroughly prepared for technical interviews

These are the most important (and also the most intimidating) interviews during the hiring process. So, preparation is key.

This is also your chance to shine since you’ll be able to show your technical skills and prove you are the right fit for the job. Companies use these technical interviews to measure the candidates’ technical skills. It only makes sense, especially when recruiting abroad, right?

So, make sure you are ready for it. Practice all you need, mainly your weaker skills. In addition, this preparation also means you must research and learn as much as possible about a specific company’s technical interview process. Try to find out what kinds of questions you might face. The more you know, the better prepared you are.

5. Make sure you are a good fit

When applying for global tech jobs, you’re going against the big dogs locally and globally. Sounds scary? It is, but only if you don’t fit the job requirements because that means you’re out.

So, when looking for global tech jobs, make sure you fit perfectly. Don’t just go hoping for a stroke of luck. Brush up your skills beforehand. You are up against hundreds of highly qualified candidates; you want to make sure you meet the required qualifications (and possibly go even beyond them).
