Unlocking tech talent stories

October 30, 2020

Although this Coronavirus pandemic is already quite scary, this isn’t stopping people for getting creative this year with the all carving pumpkin and spooky lights.

But not all horror stories are saved for the end of October — some of them happen during recruitment processes. Most of the times, you get a funny story to tell your friends but there are also some crazy or disrespectful situations. Today, members of our community are sharing some of their crazy experiences:

Double-Hire
2 months after having started working at my company, I get a call from HR introducing the company and asking if I was interested in going to an interview. Do you think if I went to the interview and got hired again, I would be able to receive 2 salaries?

Broken Phone
I sent my CV to a position, and then did the 1st interview and technical assessment. 1-week passes and nothing, I send a mail and the reply is: “We still need a few more days”. After 1 month of absolute silence, I receive a message on Linkedin from another recruiter from the same company asking if I was interested in the company and the vacancy — as if I had never gone there and hadn’t been waiting for a reply in 1 month. 5 months have passed when I receive an email from another recruiter from this company saying that they want to continue with the recruitment process. I broke out laughing.

Tomato, Avocado
This year my company in London closed and I was considering returning to Portugal. I sent a CV to a Portuguese consultant firm to work as a backend with Angular + C#. The firm sent me a “challenge” taken from the internet about ASP.NET and SOAP. It has repeated questions and multiple-choice questions with no available option to select.

4th time is not the charm
After 3 attempts to schedule an interview, without success, the company called me again and we finally managed to find a time fo the interview. Everything arranged, they told me it was scheduled for 9:30 am. I then ask how the process would be, to which they answered that the interview would actually be between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm alongside 19 other candidates. I told them to call me back when they were serious about the process.
