Landing.Tech #18 — The Pentagon’s Joint AI Center wants to be like Silicon Valley

Do you think the future of a city is not only being smart but also being adaptable?

Unlocking tech talent stories

June is just around the corner and my favorite season of the year as well: Summer. Being a regular presence in Portuguese and international Summer music festivals, I know for sure that I’m going to miss it. That’s one of the many things that will change in the upcoming times and we’ll need to live with it. We’re all together in the new normal. But let’s stop rambling and let’s check some news that I read this week:

The facial recognition startup FaceFirst has been promoting its idea of a “coronavirus-immunity registry”. The idea is to use a database run by medical providers to feed your smartphone with your immunity status or just your medical history regarding COVID-19. Do you believe we will be obliged to start using apps like this when travelling?

The Pentagon has been making moves on his Joint AI Center. It was created in 2018, to help the Pentagon use more artificial intelligence and leading military ethics initiatives, and now they’ve been actively focusing to develop predictive early warning systems. Now, the organization is the only one in the Pentagon to have product managers and an approach like the Silicon Valley scene after revamping their AI projects. What should we expect?

Alphabet was planning the development of a futuristic neighbourhood in Toronto with self-driving cars, modular buildings, or even streets that could be adapted quickly to changing needs. While this is one of the last tries, it’s not the first and certainly not the last. Do you think the future of a city is not only being smart but also being adaptable?

That is it, the next time you hear from me it will be June already and I’m going to be wearing my flip-flops and shorts from the beach. Actually, no, that’s a lie. I’ll probably be wearing shorts and flip-flops, but from my home desk, still social distancing. We’re entering an SSD — Summer of Social Distancing.

The future starts today.
