Cartoon about data

Data science not only is cool, but it’s one of the most debated topics these days. The amount of data that’s produced is increasing and data jobs are also becoming more popular and in-demand.

One of the reasons why we love data science is because it allows us to make better decisions, predictive analysis and discoveries from data patterns. It’s actually disrupting several industries by enabling game-changing solutions, like helping the airline industry forecast flight delays (and so much more) 😄

So today we’re breaking things down into the most sought skills and the top programming languages for data science jobs!

Must-haves for Data Scientists 📊

Machine Learning

Machine learning is one of the greatest skills any data scientist can have. It’s what helps them look through big chunks of data using algorithms and automating certains tasks like cleaning.

Modeling and statistics

These are the core of data science honestly. If you want to be a rockstar data expert, mathematical models go a long way. They’re part of Machine Learning and will help you solve a lot of problems by making calculations and predictions.

Data visualization

’Cause it’s all about the visuals. Being a data scientist doesn’t only mean you need to know a lot about maths and code, it means you also need to master the art of understanding data through graphics, charts, infographics, and so on. For example, one of the tools that you should know how to navigate for data visualization is Tableau.

Python

Python is the most in-demand programming language and overall skill in 2021 (by a good margin), according to a job web scraping done by Terence Shin on over 15k job postings. It’s the most popular and most adaptable programming language in this sector, handling pretty much anything you want to do.

SQL

SQL databases are also one of the most common and popular tools in data science jobs. Standing for Structured Query Language, you can see where it’s going… it’s used to communicate with a database, to update or retrieve data from it.

R

The R programming language is another one widely used by statisticians and data miners to develop statistical software and data analysis. It’s used to manipulate data as well as calculations and graphic displays.

The soft stuff — Communication and Business Strategy

Data science isn’t only made up of numbers and graphs, there’s a lot of talking too. One of the essential parts of doing this job is to communicate with stakeholders, understanding what they want and asking all. the. questions. You’re going to need to get the jist of the business problems, ask for more data and communicate key data insights.

Calling: all data scientists and aspiring ones!

Now that you know the skills that are most popular in data science jobs, it’s time to use that knowledge and consider a career in this area or seek a new opportunity if you’re already a (great) data scientist! 📈👨‍🔬

Because we love data so much, we’re hosting the Data Science June. Throughout the month of June, you’ll be able to refer a friend to any Data job on our platform and if they get hired, YOU get rewarded 300€!

How does it work? It’s simple! First, you need to be logged into your account on our platform, and then once you check a particular job, this will appear:

The “refer a friend” link will open a form where you can not only introduce this job to your friend, but also write a recommendation for the employer. For more info on this, check our FAQ page!

Here are all the Data jobs available at the moment — and if you yourself are looking for a career change or simply a new (work)place to call home, check them out and get your CV ready! 🚀

Ps: if you need interview tips, we have pretty good ones here and here. 😉
