Unlocking tech talent stories

December 3, 2015

Dear Landing,

I spotted what looks like the perfect job for me and I applied for The Ink and Paint Club positions for up-and-coming star singer using your online application system, as was required. But it has been a week and I haven’t heard anything back. Now I’m wondering whether I should have done more research to find an alternate conduit to the hiring manager, and wondering whether there are additional steps I can take to boost my chances of getting an interview. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jessica Rabbit

Sounds familiar? Déjà vu, perhaps?

So, how often do you actually update your profile?

Do you check it every once in a while or only when applying for a specific job offer?

Your Landing.jobs profile is the perfect medium to showcase your skills and talents to not only help you find the right opportunities, but to also help them find their way to you. As your professional embodiment online, you can set it up to stand out in a crowd of matchmaked profiles and searches that are done in Landing.jobs.

There is NO underlying element of luck in getting an interview. You can do much more than just toss a résumé in the hopper and wait for a phone call. You can work assiduously by following companies, creating subscriptions for your favourite job categories, keeping your profile as tight as a battleship, and getting your network to vouch for you, be it by referring or recommending you for your next gig.

Our numbers show us that candidates with complete and groomed profiles are 6 times more likely to be viewed and matchmaked to potential opportunities through Landing.jobs.

We didn’t want you to feel like you’re alone in this quest, so we stepped up and upgraded both our Talent and Employer Profile pages. Not only UX/UI-wise but also information-wise, so don’t forget to drop by and upgrade your profile. It will help us find better matches between you and the right job offers.

Marty has been live for more than a month now, and we really want to send a huge shoutout to our massive community that was relentless in giving us honest feedback and insightful bug reports. Since then, we have been very busy little bees. This week, remaining faithful to our film addiction, our dear CTO, Pedro Moreira, dubbed our most recent premiere as Jessica Rabbit’s profile enhancements.

New Features
There’s more to it than meets the eye.

We’d love to call out some of the nice improvements that we’ve done to the profile page and let you know how you can best take advantage of them! Btw, our work here is just starting.

TL;DR > New Features:

UX/UI Improvements

The balance in the Force was restored.

Our profile form was becoming a bit crowded and lacking some structure and visual hierarchy, making it really hard to grasp all the sections and main areas of the Profile page. On this new version, we cleaned the place up and put everything in its right place (ahhh… Thom…).

profilesettings

Above, in pink, you can see that we now have five items on the Talent Profile menu for:

  • Profile: all of your personal information, skills and talents go here;
  • Account: e-mail config, passwords and API tokens go here;
  • Notifications: preferences and digest frequency go here;
  • Subscriptions: subscribed searches go here;
  • Following: companies you’re stalking following go here;

Everything has a visual hierarchy now, from section headers to group bits & bytes of information related to one another (as you can see next to the green arrow).

Profile Strength Meter

Not a lightsaber, but game on!

We are now tracking profile completeness. The feature is still in a very early stage but we’re working on how to gamify it and make it visually appealing without reaching that annoying forever-ninety-nine-percent-rule that some other networks do.

Try to add as much information as possible to reach the desired 100% mark.

Drop by your profile right away if you’re feeling like it.

Skills Flight Hours

Not all of us are hotshots.

Despite what one might think, knowledge is far from being a perfect diamond; in fact, it’s miles away from being eternal. Your knowledge today is so different from your knowledge five years from now, and having worked with Java 10 years ago is a whole different ball game than working with Java today.

Tech professionals with more than 10 years of experience also don’t have the same amount of experience for all of their skills. They may have, for instance, 3 years in Ruby on Rails, 5 years with Web Development, and maybe 10 as Team Leaders but not one single level to rule them all.

That’s why we decided to introduce flight hours. From now on, you can define your level of experience/proficiency for each one of your skills. This information will allow us to improve your matchmaking and fit with the job offers on the platform.

You may even reorder them by keeping the ones you like the most at the top or even by adding ones that you don’t have a lot of experience with but still are interested in learning.

Language Proficiency

Can you order more than a coffee latte?

Running the risk of repeating ourselves, proficiency is very similar to flight hours. We just want to understand if you are barely able to order a latte or if you can bring your A-game and have a business level conversation while closing a seven figure deal!

BAM! Voilà!

Subscriptions & Following Companies

Tidy and much more easy to find.

We now have two separate pages for Subscriptions and Companies you are following. This way it’s much easier for you to manage subscriptions and stop following any company from your Portfolio.

What’s Next

Wow.

What a ride! No one said that hoverboards were easy to ride on.

After the long post, let me tell you just a bit more about the road that lays ahead:

  • Review onboarding to improve profile flows;
  • Gamifying profile completeness with quests and experience levels;
  • Adding visual cues to help you reach the 100% mark;
  • Improve the matchmaking algorithm even more to take full advantage of the new information we now have;
  • And so much more…

There’s never a dull day @ Landing.jobs.
