Landing.Tech #14 — IBM will offer free COBOL training to address overloaded unemployment systems

I can already picture a Big Mac delivery in a drone, can you?

Unlocking tech talent stories

April 17, 2020

Yes, we did it! We finally have a week where Tech had some interesting non-COVID related developments. Besides that, we’re also starting to discuss how we will “reopen” the country here in Portugal, and even with all the challenges and setbacks that could bring, in my opinion, that’s progress. It means that together we are managing to beat this.

Nonetheless, keep staying home and let’s get this started:

Two of the biggest Tech companies are merging forces to try helping on a tracking COVID-19 at scale, yes you heard it right. We won’t be discussing all the specifics of what this means in regards to your personal privacy, but of course, that mobile-based contact tracing will always be open to abuse. Even if as it seems, the proposed solution removes some of the threats there. What’s your take on this? Would you prefer to know that you were being traced but having a little bit of more freedom or are you in favor of staying at home for more time?

While some industries have stumbled, opportunities have arisen for others. The automation and robotics industry is one of them. And in Temp, autonomous robots have started making restaurant deliveries. Of course, it is still a low scale thing, either in restaurant options, either in the delivery area, but it’s pretty cool anyway. I can already picture a Big Mac delivery in a drone, can you?

Because even overloaded unemployment systems can bring something good. Do you know how to program in COBOL? IBM is releasing a free training course on the 60-year-old programming language. Why? Many of the systems that process unemployment claims still run on COBOL, and as a matter of fact, there are relatively few coders who understand it. Can you see COBOL making a comeback in the most used programming languages? I hope we don’t see it due to the unemployment crisis, but I won’t mind having a look at the online course.

If unfortunately, you’re one of the people that recently got unemployed make sure to check our jobs page. We still have companies hiring and we will be here to provide you with assistance in order for you to be back working as quickly as possible. We will overcome the COVID-19 challenge together, but also all the other challenges that are coming and will come as a consequence.

To finish this in a higher note, join us in our 1st Remote Tech Week, from the 27th of April until the 1st of May. It’s free and you can hear from great speakers on topics that can help you boost your career as well.

The future starts today.
