Sometimes, we can feel that the world is changing too fast and it’s hard to keep track of every new technology or trend that then goes obsolete after only a few weeks or months.
Normally, companies would spot these changes in their industry and simply recruit new staff to tackle different needs. However, now the pace has fastened. Innovations are appearing so often that it has become impossible for the companies to let go of its own employees in cycles of 6 months or 1 year.
That’s how the shift has moved and everyone is now focused on reskilling — the process of learning new skills so you can do a different job.
Today, we sat with Miguel Tavares (our beloved Software Developer) for some insights and advice regarding reskilling since he began his career as a lawyer! Amazing, right?!
Tell us about your experience with reskilling.
I’ve always had many interests so it was natural for me to learn new skills. With all the online information and tools available right now it’s very easy to learn, at least, the basics of any area that might interest you.
Do you think that reskilling is easy to do?
The most important thing is that you have a genuine curiosity to learn a new skill. If you really like something and are interested in it, learning a new skill is not a chore and becomes relatively easy. So I would say that having the right motivation and mindset is key to how easy it is to learn a new skill.
Why did you do it?
I did it because I got bored with my old job and wanted to do something more challenging. I started to do a few online courses and really fell in love with programming. After this, deciding to pursue a career as a developer was easy.
Tell us more about how you started programming.
I decided to do a bootcamp to accelerate my learning process and move into a career as a software developer. The Le Wagon curriculum is perfect for this purpose because it gives you a lot of knowledge in a short period of time. The structure of the lessons makes complete sense and the build-up to the final project with smaller projects is well thought out. During the times I got stuck solving a challenge or implementing a feature in my project, there were always plenty of teachers to help me out.
After finishing the bootcamp, I felt much more confident as a developer and even though there was still a lot to learn, I knew I would be able to find the solution for any issue I might encounter.
How did you start working at Landing.Jobs?
I first heard about Landing.jobs while doing the bootcamp. They had hired one of my fellow colleagues as a developer and I signed up on their site to look for a job myself. Eventually, I found a job through another site, but I kept checking the Landing.Jobs site for interesting opportunities. When they posted an opening for a junior developer, I didn’t hesitate to apply. I’ve been here for almost 2 years and it has been an amazing experience.
Any advice for people thinking about reskilling?
Before anything else, try to find out if you really are interested in learning the new skills and are motivated to put in the effort it requires. Go online, do some research, follow some tutorials and see if you like it. Don’t do it because it’s the hot new thing, do it because you have a sincere interest in learning that new skill.
The careers of the future won’t be static or finite. Today we are more than a marketplace for tech jobs — our mission at Landing.Jobs is to help everyone to take ownership of their careers and prepare for the jobs of the future.
