The Italian Tech voice was calling us and a full immersion to listen to it was needed. We’ve been seeing a growth in Italian tech professionals joining, engaging and applying through Landing.jobs lately. Because of it, we couldn’t wait to personally meet the amazing people in Italy and talk with them about dreams, goals and possible futures.
After exploring the Italian tech market in Milan, our Head of Operations David Bento, Business Developer Mario Tarouca, and myself landed in my hometown of Rome, at LVenture Group, and kicked off our panel, aiming to find out “What Italian tech pros want from their employers in 2016”.
David led the heart-to-heart between candidates and companies, along with Raffaele Gaito, Entrepreneur and Tech Blogger for StartupItalia; Simone Terranova, CTO of Moovenda; and once again, Jamahl McMurran, Head of Talent at Seedcamp — Portuguese, British and Italian points of view in one big room.

The discussion began with the results of our own survey, presented by Mario, which rolled out some very interesting insights. So what are Italian Tech candidates looking for? The answer may surprise you.
Challenge. Challenge is what really excites Developers, Software Architects, but also Marketing experts. And that’s not all: Environment is the second priority. What does that mean, exactly? That tech professionals want to work with team members whom they can learn from.
Over the course of an hour, everyone agreed on just how essential the hiring approach in the tech industry is, and how important it is to understand candidates’ personalities.
“The goal is to switch from ‘we need this’ to ‘we want you’,” backed Jamahl.
Our guests agreed on how important it is that even Founders/CEOs be involved in every level of business — including hiring.

Simone Terranova highlighted the importance of the right tech experts “when the company is just kicking off a project or making big changes”. Not only that; the professionals who have a higher retention rate are the most engaged in their workplace. Without the right tech team to guide you in the right direction, it’ll be hard to stay ahead of the competition and innovate or iterate fast enough.
Two other relevant topics were debated. Raffaele added his thoughts on the much-discussed new era of remote working:
“It’s great for the right kind of people, especially Senior Engineers who don’t need to learn as much as Juniors.”
Jamahl predicts a very high number of people who will be working from home by 2030, and advised both employers and candidates to learn how to adopt and adapt to it. Still regarding candidate relocation, Jamahl thinks that more partnerships within recruiting processes and visa agencies are needed:
“Employers should consider a diverse culture in their work environment by working hard to have both local and international candidates, and battling to incorporate both into their companies.”
Remember: we should be, “acting globally and thinking locally”.
We obviously had our signature Natas once again, as well as awesome Italian wine. 🍷 It was lovely to see the way people genuinely interacted with each other and enthusiastically asked to be introduced.
While CoContest was chilling out and looking for Developers in the crowd, I was talking with the first candidate, Vittorio Adamo, hired some months ago through Landing.jobs by Moovenda.
While Jamahl chatted with the Vice President of Wikimedia Italia and Landing.jobs fan Simone Cortesi, Eros Durante from wineOwine asked me for tips about the hiring process and updated me about the candidates we are in contact with — it was great being able to personally engage with candidates and employers I talk to via Skype back here in Lisbon! While David was sharing his thoughts with Simone, Raffaele was taking proper pictures to share his enthusiasm, as you can see above.
