Although we’ve seen some improvements in the last years, technology is still a man’s world. According to women in technology statistics 2019, only 1 out of 4 jobs is held by women in the IT industry.

One of the main issues is perception — knowing the gender of a programmer can affect opinions regarding the quality of success.
According to a study by GitHub, code written by women was accepted 78.6% of the time — 4% more than code written by men. However, this only happened when gender was kept secret to avoid bias.

Everyone makes mistakes in the workplace. Although, when it happens to women, they are more likely to be criticised and fall into the perception of “women aren’t good enough” or “women shouldn’t lead”.

Some concerning stats:

  • Women own less than 10% of startups in the world.
  • Women in the tech industry earn 29% less than their male counterparts.

Landing.Jobs is focused on increasing our knowledge of the tech community and seeking ways on what to do fight problems like equality in the tech world.

We developed the Tech Career Survey in Portugal that brought some clearance regarding what is going on and what issues need to be addressed!

Gender

Men are 4 times more in number than women.

Salary

Women annual earnings are 23% lower than men.

What can we do to help change the paradigm?

  • Amplify women’s voices: listen to women and include them in the conversations.
  • Invest in their businesses: female-fronted companies perform well — Fortune 500 companies with at least three female directors have seen a 66% increase in return of their invested capital, and they receive only a little over 2% of venture capital funding.
  • Encourage younger generations: it’s not just about closing the gender gap but also about education and empowerment — we must encourage younger generations to get involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

The best way to start is by acknowledging faults and addressing them, especially in the tech industry. No company is perfect but open conversations and desire to change move the needle. It’s all about taking real steps to improve the environment that exists for women in the workplace.

And that’s why Landing.Jobs is sponsoring the ‘HR & Talent Acquisition Pro’ award category in Portuguese Women in Tech Awards 2020.
