The challenge and the fast-paced environment in a company are the things that make working in tech interesting for candidates, however the compensation is a widely known plus for any professional sailing the jobs market seas. For companies, salaries are key to make your employee value proposition stand out, so it’s essential to know the figures practised in the market they’re operating in.

For a few years now, Landing.jobs has been able to observe some trends and track how salaries have been evolving and influencing the Portuguese tech ecosystem. For the second year in a row, we’re releasing the data we’ve collected through the Tech Salaries in Portugal Report, as an effort to share this knowledge with the community.

This year we’ve analysed more than 1000 job openings in Portugal — split mainly between Lisbon (85%) and Porto (15%) — and here are the results!

Roll the drums, please!

The first and most obvious remark is that Management roles -by default- have higher salaries, essentially due to the sense of ownership demanded, the scarcity of profiles and the organisational impact expected. However, some individual track roles such as Back-end Developer, Mobile Developer and Data Scientist are having very interesting absolute growths.

In comparison with last year, we’ve registered a 10% growth on the average salaries. These numbers have never been this high, and some even indicate a growth as high as 15%, which is considered disruptive for the Portuguese market’s averages.

According to our data, Lisbon remains the most competitive tech centre in the country, which is mostly due to the fact that it has a higher number of tech companies and tech professionals based there. However, Porto is stepping up its game not only with very interesting companies, but also because of the increasingly active tech community currently establishing there. Nonetheless, salaries are still 5% to 10% lower than the average in Lisbon.

With all of this being said, it is important to highlight that the tech world is not only made of developers. There’s a variety of roles and responsibilities that can be very well paid. And the more senior a professional is, the higher the salary awarded is likely to be, especially in more scarce technologies.

Data from Landing.jobs

These average salaries vary not only in seniority, but also according to the industry and type of company. Product teams tend to have higher salaries than consulting companies, but there are still a bunch of variables that affect these salaries ranges. Bare in mind, these numbers are averages, therefore there are both higher and lower salaries out there!

These Gross Annual Salary values might be decisive not only for talent attraction but also for retention. Professionals working both on the individual contribution track or on the management will naturally aim for higher contributions that match their efforts in the company and their market value, which is why something like this data comes so in hand!

Tech really is the place to be right now, but- while you’re on the other side- it’s essential to use these numbers and share them with your team and with your employees! Let us know if this has been helpful and if these numbers surprised you in any way!
